In 2001, PORTIA incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee.

The current focus is to work with industry, public bodies and intermediary organisations on promoting key and emerging digital technologies as areas of opportunity for women to develop new career directions, engage more deeply in innovation, and use science and technology as tools for delivering positive socio-cultural change.

We are named after Portia labiata, "the spider so smart it puts mammals to shame"

We are also named after Portia the character in literature, where she has been portrayed as an example of

Fortitude,

Constancy,

Bravery,

Determination,

Intelligence,

Resourcefullness and

Self-worth.

See for example Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and Merchant of Venice; Boccaccio's De Claris Mulieribus (On Famous Women); and Maxiumus' Memorable Words and Deeds.
