Knowledge and Skills

for a Digital Future

In September 2007, Portia organised a 2-day conference under the topic Knowledge and Skills for a Digital Future, which was hosted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Digital technologies are irreversibly transforming the way we work and live our lives, leaving no sector untouched by the changes. The objective of the conference was to bring together major key players, employers, professional bodies, academia to discuss what these changes mean in terms of the knowledge and skills that employers will need and expect, and individuals will have to be able to provide. The conference also focused on Best Practice in delivering diversity policies, with a new Equalitec report Implementing Diversity Policies: Guiding Principles, launched during the event.

Speakers included: HP, Fujitsu Services, Oracle and Financial Times. One issue raised by the audience concerned the image of IT Industry and of the job roles it offers now and will in the future, which were failing to attract the interest of young girls. Subsequently, the Financial Times launched in its Digital Business section the IT Celebrity campaign and featured a number of high profile women in IT in the editions following the conference.
